Barton Biggs Says Stock Market Set to ‘Pop’ in Days (Update2)
May 27 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stock markets are oversold and may rally strongly over the next few days , said investor Barton Biggs, who runs New York-based hedge fund Traxis Partners LP.
“I think they’re going to stabilize in this general area, and then we’re going to have a significant move to the upside,” Biggs, whose flagship fund returned three times the industry average last year, said in a Bloomberg Television interview.
Biggs recommended buying U.S. stocks last year when benchmark indexes sank to the lowest levels since the 1990s. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rallied 23 percent in 2009 as government worldwide mounted stimulus programs to counter a recession. On March 22 this year, Biggs told Bloomberg TV that U.S. stocks had the potential to rally a further 10 percent. The S&P 500 has since shed 8.4 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 10 percent in May, poised for its worst month since February 2009, as credit-ratings downgrades of Greece, Portugal and Spain add to concern some European nations will struggle to fund deficits.
“The market is very, very oversold, and I think we’re going to have a big pop to the upside some time in the next couple of days ,” said Biggs. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see us go to a new recovery high, just to make everybody squirm.”
The S&P 500 lost 0.6 percent yesterday on concern the credit crisis will worsen. The China Investment Corp. decided to maintain its investments in Europe after having debated lowering its allocation to the region, Reuters cited Gao Xiqing, president of the sovereign wealth fund, as saying.
“The European concerns are serious, and I take them seriously,” Biggs said today. “I just don’t think that the worst is going to happen.”

• Market Commentary

Yesterday the DOW gapped down almost 300 points right on the open and then came back on the close. Amazingly the S&P 500 actually finished in the green. You could feel the panic on the open and I was a little scared myself.
I thought the market would shake off the gap down, but was prepared to sell out if it didn't by the close. I thought such a thing would be incredibly odd if it happened since we have already seen so much intense selling in the market the past few weeks you would think that most of the sellers are actually out of the market by now.
However, it is unlikely that the stock market is going to just go straight up from here. Instead it will probably go sideways in a range for the next 5-10 sessions - long enough to make the short-term 15 day bollinger bands start to come together. I talk about this in this video:

Next Monday on Memorial Day I'm going to map out a game plan for you to profit from this stock market collapse.
On that day I also will open up the WSW Power Investor to new members. I plan on making this the last time that I open up the service to the general public ever, because I plan on taking it completely private and launching a cheap and dumbed down service for the general public late in the Fall as a replacement. People will have to eventually join this service first before they can join the Power Investor Service - and the Power Investor service will also be at twice the price.
We are simply getting full of people and this service really isn't for the masses of investors who simply just buy stock picks and TV recommendations like robots, but for the minority of people who are really serious about learning how to trade and invest. It is an interactive community of real traders and I want to be selective of who we let in.
I'll have more details on the service next week following a pure content presentation on what to do in this market.
