Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Stocks rose, copper climbed to a record and Treasuries fell after President Barack Obama agreed to extend tax cuts, offsetting concern that Europe’s debt crisis will spread further.
The Stoxx Europe 600 Index climbed 1.3 percent at 10:30 a.m. in London, while Standard & Poor’s 500 Index futures added 0.9 percent. The yield on the 10-year Treasury climbed nine basis points to 3.01 percent. The Dollar Index fell 0.4 percent. Copper rallied as much as 2.8 percent and oil advanced to a 26- month high. U.K. power prices rose after electricity consumption jumped yesterday to the highest level this year.
Obama said he’ll agree to a two-year extension on all Bush- era tax cuts in a compromise deal he called “an essential step on the road to recovery.” European Union countries are set to give formal approval to the aid package for Ireland announced Nov. 28 while the Irish parliament will vote today on its budget, which must be passed for the aid to go into effect.
The U.S. tax cut extension “places less of an onus on monetary policy to actually stimulate the economy,” David Forrester, a currency economist at Barclays Capital, said in a Bloomberg Television interview from Singapore. In Europe, there’s “lots of disagreement among policy makers, which is creating more uncertainty,” he said.
