Asian Stocks Climb, Reversing Loss; Japan''s Utility Shares Rise

By Kyung Bok Cho and Masaki Kondo

Nov. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Asian stocks climbed, reversing an earlier loss, as Japan''s pharmaceutical and utility shares rose as the nation''s first recession since 2001 led investors to favor companies whose earnings are sheltered from the global slowdown.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. advanced 4.5 percent after Japan''s economy contracted an annualized 0.4 percent, making the shares more attractive in a downturn. Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd. jumped by the most since April 1991 after Lion Nathan Ltd. offered to buy the company for A$7.6 billion ($4.9 billion). BHP Billiton Ltd. lost 2.6 percent as crude dropped as low as $55.60 a barrel.

``Shares are so cheap that investors are wanting to get back into stocks,'''' said Mitsushige Akino, who oversees about $468 million at Tokyo-based Ichiyoshi Investment Management Co. ``Looking past companies with low earnings hopes and those that depend on deteriorating overseas demand, the remaining choice is defensive stocks.''''

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index added 0.8 percent to 83.78 at 12:51 p.m. in Tokyo, reversing an earlier decline of 2.2 percent. Japan''s Nikkei 225 Stock Average gained 3.2 percent to 8,729.62, erasing earlier losses. Benchmarks around the region were mixed.

Australia''s S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 1.8 percent. Babcock & Brown Ltd., which has plunged 98 percent this year, said it may lose $41 million on a venture with GPT Group.
