U.S. Stock-Index Futures Climb Before Pending Home Sales Data

June 2 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stock futures rose on speculation a report on pending-home sales will show the housing market is stabilizing. Gains were limited as the Standard & Poor?Ts 500 Index traded at the highest level relative to earnings since October.

Cardinal Health Inc. may be active after the distributor of prescription medicine increased its quarter dividend by 25 percent. Citigroup Inc., the recipient of $45 billion in taxpayer aid, and Caterpillar Inc., the world?Ts largest maker of bulldozers and excavators, fell more than 1 percent in Europe.

S&P 500 futures expiring this month added 0.1 percent to 940.3 at 12:23 p.m. in London after falling as much as 0.5 percent. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures increased 0.1 percent to 8,690 and Nasdaq 100 Index futures advanced 0.2 percent to 1,473.5.

The S&P 500 surged 2.6 percent yesterday for its highest close since Nov. 5. The gauge reached a value of 15.4 times the earnings of its companies, the highest level since October, after reports on manufacturing, personal income and construction spending beat economists?T forecasts.

?oWê?Tre surprised that the S&P climbed that high, especially when looking at the economy,? said Walter Harecker, a fund manager at Constantia Privatbank AG in Vienna, which oversees $9.9 billion. ?oWê?Tre still in a recession. The speed of the decline is a bit less now, but we don?Tt see a turnaround.?

Europê?Ts Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index was little changed after yesterday?Ts rally lifted its valuation to 25.4 times the profits of member companies, the most expensive level since March 2004. Barclays Plc sank 14 percent after the bank?Ts Abu Dhabi investors said they will sell 4.12 billion pounds ($6.8 billion) of shares in the U.K. lender.

Citigroup, Caterpillar

Citigroup lost 4.3 percent to $3.53 in German trading, while Caterpillar retreated 1 percent to $37.16.

The number of Americans signing contracts to purchase previously owned homes probably rose in April for the fourth time in five months as lower prices attracted buyers, economists said before a report today.

The projected 0.5 percent increase would follow a 3.2 percent gain in March, according to the median estimate of 32 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. The report is due at 10 a.m. in Washington.

The slump in the housing market helped send the S&P 500 down 57 percent from its record of 1,565.15 on Oct. 9, 2007, to its March low as the collapse of subprime mortgages froze credit markets, triggered global bank losses of $1.48 trillion and caused the worst U.S. recession in half a century. General Motors Corp., the largest U.S. automaker, filed for bankruptcy protection yesterday.

Profitable Bet

GM may prove a profitable bet for stock traders who sell their shares within a week of the company?Ts bankruptcy filing. Stocks of the 20 largest U.S. companies that declared bankruptcy since 1980 rose an average 18 percent one week after filing for court protection from creditors, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and BankruptcyData.com.

GM added 24 percent to 93 cents in Germany.

The rally in the S&P 500 above its 200-day moving average is sending a bullish signal after the measure traded below the level for the longest period since the 1930s.

The benchmark gauge for American equities rose to 942.87 yesterday, exceeding its mean price of 926.89 over the past 200 days on a closing basis, data compiled by Bloomberg show. The climb halted a 523-day stretch where the S&P 500 trailed the average, the second longest in history.

Five stocks declined for every four that advanced today in the MSCI Asia Pacific Index, which lost 0.2 percent. The gauge trades at 43.1 times profit, the most expensive since at least 2003, weekly data compiled by Bloomberg show.

The MSCI Asia measure erased an earlier advance of as much as 1.2 percent after Yonhap News said North Korea was preparing to launch a medium-range missile.
