U.S. Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index Rose to 76 in June

June 25 (Bloomberg) -- Confidence among U.S. consumers rose in June to the highest level in more than two years, a private survey showed.
The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan final index of consumer sentiment increased to 76, the highest since January 2008, from 73.6 in May. The gauge was projected to rise to 75.5, according to the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.
The figure signals the decline in stock prices prompted by the European debt crisis has failed to weigh on sentiment. Gains in confidence need to be accompanied by faster job growth to allow for a pickup in consumer spending that accounts for 70 percent of the economy.
“The fact the labor market seems to have bottomed out is giving some support,” David Sloan, a senior economist at 4Cast Inc. in New York, said before the report. “It’s a recovery but not a very strong one.”
Estimates in the Bloomberg survey of 64 economists for the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan final June measure ranged from 73 to 76.5. The index was higher than the preliminary reading of 75.5.
The economy expanded at a 2.7 percent annual rate in the first quarter, less than previously calculated, the Commerce Department reported today. The revised increase compares with a 3 percent estimate issued last month and shows an economy more dependent on inventory rebuilding and less driven by consumer and corporate demand.
The Michigan gauge of current conditions, which reflects Americans’ perceptions of their financial situation and whether it is a good time to buy big-ticket items such as cars, rose to 85.6 in June, the highest since January 2008, from 81 in May.
Expectations Index
The index of consumer expectations for six months from now, which more closely projects the direction of consumer spending, increased to 69.8 in June from 68.8.
Gains in confidence and spending in coming months hinge on a sustained recovery in the job market. Private payrolls rose by 41,000 in May, fewer than forecast, Labor Department figures showed on June 4. Overall employment climbed by 431,000, boosted by government hiring of temporary workers for the census. The jobless rate fell to 9.7 percent as discouraged workers left the labor force.
A Bloomberg survey taken this month showed the jobless rate will end the year at 9.5 percent and average 9.1 percent in 2011, according to the median estimate.
European Debt
Stocks have fallen on concern the global economic rebound may falter as European governments struggle with swelling budget deficits. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index has dropped 12 percent from a 19-month high on April 23 through yesterday.
Spending may be starting to cool. Sales at U.S. retailers unexpectedly dropped in May for the first time in eight months, the Commerce Department reported on June 11.
Purchases fell 1.2 percent, led by a record plunge in demand at building-material stores that may have reflected the end of a government rebate on energy-saving appliances, according to figures from the Commerce Department.
Consumers and homeowners are “still a little bit fragile, given the state of the economy today and the fact that we haven’t seen robust growth, haven’t seen robust employment coming back,” Robert Niblock, chief executive officer at Lowe’s Cos Inc., the second largest home-improvement chain, said in a June 23 teleconference.
Lower Fuel Prices
One source of relief for households is lower fuel prices. The cost of regular unleaded gasoline is down 6.1 percent since a 2010 peak of $2.93 a gallon reached on May 5, according to AAA, and was at $2.75 at the pump yesterday.
Consumer spending grew at a 3 percent annual pace in the first three months of 2010, less than previously reported, the Commerce Department’s figures today showed.
Economists surveyed this month projected purchases will expand at a 3 percent rate in the April-to-June period and 2.6 percent in the second half of the year.
