/HANOI (Reuters) - Thailand's PTT and global private equity firms are lining up to bid for a 15-20 percent stake in Vietnam's state-owned Petro Vietnam Gas Corp (PV Gas) in an auction estimated to be worth about $600 million.
Other interested parties could include ConocoPhillips and India's Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd (ONGC), sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.
The auction comes as PV Gas makes final preparations for Vietnam's largest-ever initial public offering, an event that could help kickstart the stalled privatisations of other state-owned companies in the communist country.
Thailand's top energy company PTT Pcl confirmed its interest in PV Gas after a Reuters report earlier on Tuesday said PTT and other national oil companies were expected to bid.
"We are studying details about the auction and PTT International will join the bid on behalf of PTT group," Chitrapongse Kwangsukstith, president of PTT International Co Ltd, told Reuters.
Private equity firms that have invested in the sector such as Blackstone Group LP and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co (KKR) are also expected to explore an offer.
PV Gas is selling about a 5 percent stake through the IPO in an about $150 million deal that will give it a market value of about $3 billion.
PV Gas said it was scheduled to price the IPO on Nov. 17.
The company had set a Nov. 12 deadline for strategic investors to submit bids, PV Gas Chief Executive Do Khang Ninh told Reuters.
Potential suitors mentioned in this report either declined to comment or could not be reached for comment. The sources were not authorised to speak publicly because details of the auction are private.
"PV Gas plans to sell the stake this year. After strategic partners are chosen, they need to be approved by Petrovietnam," Ninh said.
The company is likely to decide on one or two strategic buyers for the 20 percent stake sale.
Thailand's PTT International is a holding company set up to invest in overseas businesses for the energy giant.

    GROWING GAS DEMAND
PV Gas is Vietnam's biggest LPG trader, and sources said strong growth for gas demand in Vietnam was the main draw for potential investors.
"The attraction is to get into a fast-growing market," a source familiar with the matter told Reuters, adding: "The price is attractive enough to get a few strategics interested."
Morgan Stanley is acting as a sell-side adviser to PV Gas on the auction, sources said. Morgan Stanley declined to comment.
The PV Gas IPO and strategic sale will mark a new chapter for Vietnam's volatile stock markets. After the IPO, PV Gas could account for about 10 percent of Vietnam's total market capitalisation.
"If that is the case, there is real potential this company could become the proxy for the Vietnamese stock market," the source said.
The Vietnamese government has "equitised", or privatised, thousands of state-owned companies since the late 1990s. The process peaked between 2003 and 2006, but has slowed to a trickle since 2007.
Investors were anxiously waiting for the process to be stepped up because it was expected to boost the overall economy and the stock markets, analysts said.
