The deadline for GM''s bondholders to tender their debt is midnight Tuesday, and GM said it will announce the results Wednesday morning. If bondholders representing 90 percent of GM''s unsecured debt -- about $24 billion -- don''t agree to the exchange, GM has said it will file for bankruptcy protection.

    Thông tin trên Bloomberg này:

GM Majority Equity Stake to Be Held by Treasury (Update2)
    Share | Email | Print | A A A

    By John Hughes

May 26 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp.?Ts equity would be majority owned by the Treasury once the automaker?Ts restructuring plan is in place, said a person familiar with government discussions.

A restructured Chrysler LLC is close to emerging from bankruptcy and will come out on the short end of earlier estimates of 30 to 60 days, said the person. Chrysler, which filed for protection April 30, isn?Tt likely to emerge this week, the person said today.

GM is working to pare costs and win concessions from workers and bondholders before a June 1 bankruptcy deadline set by President Barack Obama. The company has said bankruptcy is ?oprobable,? and the quick reorganization of Chrysler will provide comfort to consumers should GM need to file for bankruptcy, the person said.

?oThe government has showed that it?Ts going to put its muscle behind this,? George Magliano, director of automotive research for IHS Global Insight Inc. in New York, said in a Bloomberg Television interview. ?oThey don?Tt want a long bankruptcy. They want to get it in, get it out to minimize the impact of a long bankruptcy.?

The person, who asked not to be identified describing private talks, wouldn?Tt estimate the government?Ts ownership percentage for GM. The Canadian government also will have an equity stake, the person said.

    Short-Term Ownership

The government?Ts ownership would be for the shortest period of time possible and, as a shareholder, the government would participate as minimally as would be responsible, the person said. No government employees will serve on GM?Ts board.

A possible bankruptcy at GM, should one become necessary, will be a bit longer than Chrysler?Ts because of GM?Ts complexity, the person said. Obama hasn?Tt made a decision on how much debtor-in-possession financing GM would get in a bankruptcy, and the government will provide adequate working capital during any Chapter 11 process, the person said.

Chrysler plans to sell most of its assets to a new entity formed with Italian automaker Fiat SpA. Chrysler?Ts May sales, which were at levels similar to April?Ts, show consumers have accepted Chrysler will emerge from Chapter 11, the person said.

The person declined to predict the outcome of GM?Ts bond exchange offer, which has a deadline at 11:59 p.m. New York time today. Talks with bondholders can continue up to the June 1 deadline.

    Longer Bankruptcy

The possibility of a GM bankruptcy becomes greater as time goes on, the person said, declining to speculate on whether or where a filing may occur. Compared with Chrysler?Ts bankruptcy, GM?Ts would be longer because it is a bigger company with international operations, is publicly held and has public debt, the person said.

GM tapped $4 billion more in U.S. aid last week to push its total to $19.4 billion. GM also won a union agreement to cut the payment of stock to a United Auto Workers health-care trust by 55 percent, giving the biggest U.S. automaker more equity to spread among creditors.

More auto suppliers are expected to file Chapter 11, the person said.

More than 40 major suppliers filed for Chapter 11 last year, according to the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association. At least five have filed for bankruptcy this year, and many of the country?Ts largest suppliers, such as Lear Corp. and Visteon Corp., have amended or gotten waivers on loans to stay in compliance with lending terms.
