Asian Stocks Rise on Toyota Profit Forecast, Record Gold Price

By Nicolas Johnson and Satoshi Kawano

May 12 (Bloomberg) -- Asian stocks rose, led by carmakers and gold producers, after Toyota Motor Corp. and Isuzu Motors Ltd. forecast higher earnings and bullion advanced to a record.
Toyota, the world’s largest carmaker, climbed 2.3 percent in Tokyo after saying annual profit will increase by almost half. Isuzu, Japan’s largest maker of light-duty trucks, gained 5.3 percent after forecasting a more-than-doubling of net income. Newcrest Mining Ltd. and Lihir Gold Ltd., Australia’s top-two gold producers, led gains in Sydney.
“Expectations that corporate earnings will recover should support stocks,” said Hiroichi Nishi, an equities manager in Tokyo at Nikko Cordial Securities Inc.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index rose 0.5 percent to 119.41 as of 9:13 a.m. in Tokyo, with more than three times as many stocks advancing as declining. The index is little changed this year as concern Greece will default on its debt and China will cool economic growth eroded confidence that a reviving U.S. economy will drive a global recovery.
Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index were little changed. The index fell 0.3 percent yesterday in New York as oil and copper slumped on growing skepticism a European loan package of almost $1 trillion will halt the region’s debt crisis.
Gold traded in Asia today near its record yesterday in New York on investor concern international financial support for indebted European states will depress currencies.
Bullion for immediate delivery traded down 0.1 percent at $1,231.50 an ounce at 8:07 a.m. in Sydney after yesterday reaching a record $1,234.50. The previous high of $1,226.56 was set on Dec. 3.
The yen fell against the euro and the dollar as signs the global economic recovery is gaining momentum damped demand for safety of Japan’s currency. The yen dropped to 117.59 per euro as of 9:28 a.m. in Tokyo from 117.32 yesterday in New York. It declined to 92.86 per dollar from 92.65.
