Spanish Parliament to vote on economic measures

Spanish government seeks parliamentary approval for emergency economic measures

    On Thursday May 27, 2010, 5:45 am
MADRID (AP) -- Spain's finance minister has pleaded with lawmakers to vote in favor of emergency economic measures saying they are harsh but necessary to reduce the country's bloated deficit.
The package, which includes a cut in civil servants' wages, will be voted on Thursday and approval is expected to be by possibly just one vote.
Finance Minister Elena Salgado told Parliament "the measures are painful but inevitable."
A defeat would be a serious blow for the Socialist government of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
The measures have been welcomed by the Europe Union and international bodies but much criticized at home as a major U-turn on social policies by the Socialists.

European Economic Confidence Unexpectedly Declines (Update1)

    By Simone Meier

May 31 (Bloomberg) -- European confidence in the economic outlook unexpectedly worsened in May and inflation accelerated less than economists forecast as the region’s debt crisis shook markets.
An index of executive and consumer sentiment in the 16 euro nations fell to 98.4 from 100.6 in April, the European Commission in Brussels said today. Economists had forecast a confidence reading of 100.6, based on the median of 25 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey. Consumer prices rose 1.6 percent in May from a year ago, a separate report showed, below the 1.7 percent rate forecast by economists.
The euro-region economy may struggle to gather strength after Greece’s budget crisis eroded investor confidence and forced governments to step up spending cuts to reduce deficits. While a drop in the euro this year has helped bolster exports, it’s also pushing up import costs. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index has lost 7 percent over the past two months.
“There wasn’t a day over the past weeks without a report about the Greek crisis, about declining equity markets or a possible double dip, which is all weighing on sentiment,” said Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING Group in Brussels. “On the other hand, a weaker euro is good for exports and manufacturers are doing great. It’s a purely psychological story.”
Confidence among consumers fell to minus 18 in May from minus 15 in April, the commission report showed. Sentiment in the retailing, construction and services industries also declined. Manufacturing sentiment rose to minus 6 from minus 7.
The euro remained higher against the dollar after the reports were published and was up 0.3 percent to $1.2305 as of 10:05 a.m. in London.
